Tai Chi is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. Since the first widespread promotion of Tai Chi's health benefits in the early 20th century, it has developed a worldwide following among people with little or no interest in the martial applications of Tai Chi. Individuals seek the benefits to begin a healthy lifestyle or maintain one. It is purported that focusing the mind solely on the movements of the form helps to bring about a state of mental calm and clarity. The vigorous Fa-jing (?? release of power) was removed from the empty hand form, as well as the energetic jumping, stamping, and other abrupt movements. The slow, steady, and soft movements made it more suitable for general practitioners.
